Do exercises 4 and 5. Keep this until tomorrow.
Turn in your work from yesterday. (article on gender roles with read/react chart)
Begin the Novel
Today, we will begin the novel, Like Water for Chocolate! Tomorrow, I will assign you to some close reading groups that will have you reading the rest of the book through an analytical lense, either historical, gender, psychological, or archetypal. Today, we will all read chapter 1, though, to get a feel for the story. As you read this chapter, and every chapter thereafter, you will need to use post-it notes to mark and reflect on examples of the following:
magical realism
love
conflict
symbolism
Conflict Map
As you read Chapter 1, create a visual map of the characters involved in conflicts throughout the story. Who has beef with whom?
Homework
Finish reading chapter 1 and completing your conflict chart.
Reminder: Independent Reading
Work on independent reading and journaling. You will get a new book this week, so you need to try to get your journaling close to done! The deadline for journals will be Friday, October 11!
